BIDDY BUNZL IS VERY SERIOUS ABOUT JOY.
Great labour goes into constructing chords of colour and shape that
take us, for a time, into her world of sustained and sustaining pleasure.
"Above all else I want the work to be joyful”.

Her paintings are self-contained entities and only refer very obliquely to external subject matter. At the same time she does begin to work with certain compelling visual memories setting the mood for her performance within the space of the canvas. These can range from a particular line in a child's drawing to the curve of edge of a moving leaf outside the studio window to memories of the individual pathways people use to choose to cross the same landscape.
These heightened glimpses stand with the practical history of previous work to provide a starting point for invention. The practical history appears to include a consistent use of the canvas edge as the cardinal term of composition with several subsidiary rectangles, deformed off the square like reflections, set in play within the cardinal edge. This structure in turn hosts a final move where the parent rectangle is dissolved into looser and more volatile geometries. Colour is deployed in a way that makes it seem like a material substance with dimensions beyond the literal skin of the paint: one of the rectangular motifs can appear to be the visible sixth side of a great mass while another the flimsiest of curtains. The final outcome depends on knife-edge improvisation within the arena she has constructed for herself where the smallest added gesture can tilt the work off balance or bring it to fruition, like a grain of sand on a scale. These images give paramount value to the lived moment: To now. - PAUL DE MONCHAUX
